Insider’s View of Kelowna: Donna McGrath

The local planning committee members will share their tips for things to see and do in the Kelowna and Okanagan region over the coming months. This month, Donna McGrath from Okanagan College offers her version of a ‘Lonely Planet’ guide to Kelowna and the beautiful surrounding area.

1. Tell us about your favourite place to eat in Kelowna.

One of my favourite places to eat in Kelowna is the Minstrel Cafe. Set in the heart of The Mission, it offers a fabulous setting to enjoy great food, wine and music.  With live music Tuesday to Saturday, it is a cultural hub in Kelowna. It is so nice to relax with friends on the beautiful patio area for lunch or in the evening during the hot summer days in the Okanagan. Did I mention that the food is fantastic?!

2. What is your top family-friendly activity to do while in the Okanagan region?

One of our favourite family outings is hiking or biking on the incredible network of trails in the Okanagan.  There are so many beautiful areas to explore in and around the city. The local ski areas (Silver Star and Big White) have fantastic trail systems. One of the most popular cycling trails is the Kettle Valley Railroad Trail.  Rent a bike and go explore after the Summer Seminar conference is over of course.

3. As a local, where would we find you on a summer day?

On a summer day after a walk in the Bella Vista Hills in the Vernon area, I am either chilling with a glass of Okanagan wine in the back yard by the pool, swimming in Kalamalka Lake at beautiful Jade Bay or enjoying a meal at a local winery.
