BCCIE RE-STRUCTURING
TO SUPPORT NEW MANDATE

Vancouver, BC – January 11, 2012

As mentioned in the previous BCCIE transition update, the Ministry of Advanced Education has encouraged and the BCCIE board has supported a re-alignment and re-focusing of BCCIE’s role in supporting the province’s international education (IE) strategy. Under our evolving mandate, BCCIE will support IE stakeholders and the provincial government in the following activities:

  1. Leadership and Engagement
  2. Market Support
  3. Communications and Service

In light of these changes, and through the articulation of a provincial IE strategy, the provincial government will assume leadership on IE marketing and branding in order to reach ambitious new targets. BCCIE will continue to support provincial marketing initiatives as well as manage the new Study in BC website. We will also continue to support the high standards of the sector through ongoing professional development activities.

As such, BCCIE is re-structuring its operations and organization. Although we will be losing key positions and very key people in this transition, we will also be rationalizing and creating a small number of new positions to support our core mandate of IE leadership, communications and service, and market support. I would like to sincerely thank all of our dear BCCIE colleagues who will be moving on to new challenges and opportunities in the coming months; this has been an exceptional team of people to work with, and it is due in no small part to their efforts that BC is seen globally as the Canadian leader in IE.

  • As of January 27th, Ruth Erskine will leave her position of Office Manager and the position will not be renewed.
  • The contract for the position of Manager, China and East Asia Programs will not be renewed.
  • With the changes to BCCIE’s engagement in marketing, the positions of Director, Marketing and Quality Assurance, and Coordinator, Marketing and Research will also be vacated. Gustavo Espinola will leave BCCIE on January 27th, and Tina Chow will leave the organization on March 2nd.
  • Trevor Corkum, Director, Research and Communications, is also leaving BCCIE at the beginning of February to assume a new position at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax.
  • And lastly, with the retirement of Dr Emery Dosdall on December 31st, the position of BCCIE President has been eliminated. We would especially like to thank Emery for his years of service in the school districts, in the provincial government and with BCCIE.

Throughout this new year we look forward to working closely with our incoming Board, with the Ministry of Advanced Education and other supportive Ministries in the provincial government, and with our diverse stakeholders and partners, and to working collegially to advance the sector and the IE interests of the province.

Randall Martin, PhD
Executive Director
